Last week I got a small surprise in a form of a bill, the type you get from a pirate.
At the same time an article came to me about a model that Harvard has been studying for 80 years in their Adult Development program (as the article said). I have been aware of self-awareness practices for a while now. It’s funny to see some material bubble up from the ether exactly when I needed to practice it.
This article talked about the WISER practice which they claim emotionally intelligent people employ. It’s flattering to think that I practice emotional intelligence. Does this make me intelligent, or is it some self-back-patting?
The WISER model
Watch
Observe your emotion. Pause, name it, and understand what triggered it.
Interpret
Have you made any assumptions? Might those assumptions be flawed?
Select
Make a course of action after careful consideration. Aim at sensible results.
Engage
Execute your plan.
Reflect
Was your plan/response adequate? Was it appropriate after the chain of emotion you experienced?
I decided to let my outrage melt away and proceeded to enjoy my weekend with no action on my part. We will deal with it in due time.
